Up here in Nor-Cal we definitely don’t have the weather that is stereotypical for California. It rains a lot, and rarely gets above 70 degrees in the summer. But as far as winters go things tend to spring more to life, then die like other parts of the country. Case in point, some very confused vegetation on our back porch.

Somehow this has turned into music week…but I had to share with you the goodness that is Flight of the Conchords.
It’s just two crazy Kiwi’s and a couple of guitars, but what ensues is pure genius. Check their music here or here. You must give “Business Time” a listen.
Arcata is a college town about 5 minutes north of us. Full of leftover hippies from the 60’s Arcata is a town that boasts a Green Party dominated City Council, an ordinance that prohibts chain restraunts and is overall a very unique town. For a taste of Humboldt click here.

Always on the search for something new I’ve been hearing quite a buzz about a hasidic artist by the name of Matisyahu. It’s not to often you see a hasidic music artist, let alone one that performs with Reggae/Hip Hop sounds. Not afraid to sing about his faith, 26 year old Matisyahu (born Matthew Miller) has gone on quite a journey and I’m sure we’ll be hearing more of him in the near future.
Check out the reggae, rapping, hasidic sounds of Matisyahu below.

It’s really only been recently that Christian music has started to get more mainstream attention and even be comparable to “secular” music. But long before Lifehouse and Switchfoot there was a cutting edge glam rock band by the name of Stryper anchored by the legendary Sweet Brothers.
They are back with a new album that is going to move you with classic 80’s solos and bad lyrics. Check out some of their hot tunes here. Make sure to give the 1986 classic “To Hell with the Devil” a listen.

I’ve never done one of these stupid things before but thought I would try it out. Some of the questions are pretty rigged but despite that I thought I would throw it on here.

Without crazy people life wouldn’t be quite the same. You know what I mean, people like Michael Jackson, your wierd relative, or homless Bob add color to the world. What has always been intriguing to me are the crazy religious people. In a class Jess took for her nursing program last year they actually have a mental illness classification for people who ramble and rant about religious material.
I now introduce to you Prophet Mark:

He is from the pot growing town of Redway and has a website where he has put up some words from god. The big prophecy is of a Tsunami which is going to hit the coast…but not California because of a “hedge of protection.”
Check out this interview by the Northcoast Journal for more of Prophet Mark.

Been a little sparse on the posting the last couple weeks with the holidays and all and getting caught up with stuff for the New Year. Right now I’m sitting in my office listening to one of my favorite artists of all time - Keb Mo. If you like Blues then you know him, if you don’t like Blues then you have to give him a listen anyway. His style is contemporary Delta Blues with very upbeat and positive lyrics.
I had an inquiry recently about my New Years resolutions. Although I don’t generally make them it is the begining of the year so I can’t help but think about them.
So here are a few unofficial ones:
* Write more this year expanding to more than short articles
* Start to learn Chinese seriously
* Push-ups and sit-ups regularly? (working out is boring as heck)
I’ve found the more resolutions you make the greater chance of doing none of them is, so we’ll stop there. If you have any good ones to share then do so.

Well if you’re local then you are well aware of the freakish storm we had pass through the last couple of days. If you’re not then you might have seen some news footage. Trees falling down like like dominos, wide spread power outages, flooding, and just general mayhem caused by a storm that dropped a ton of rain and had winds peaking out at 85 mph. All of this made for an unusual start to the New Year. Luckily Jessica and I came back down the coast just before all this hit, as almost all of the highways were closed at one point or another.
For a few pics click on the link below…and have a happy New Year!
